When Paisley’s owner lost her precious Yorkie, she knew a printed photo to remember her wouldn’t work. She wanted a lasting tribute—something worthy of Paisley’s memory and spirit. What followed was a deeply personal collaboration that turned three cellphone snapshots into a cherished heirloom.
Creating a Custom Pet Portrait from Cellphone Photos
Creating an original oil painting of a pet—especially one who has passed—is always an emotional process. In Paisley’s case, the only reference images were casual snapshots taken with a phone. They showed her from different angles and settings, but none were ideal for a formal portrait. I had to interpret and synthesize those into a single unified composition that honored Paisley’s personality and physical traits.
Reconstructing Memory Through Art
With no ideal reference image, I studied every detail: the soft texture of her fur, the delicate bow in her hair, the sparkle in her eyes. From there, I designed a new setting and pose to bring out her elegance and sweetness. The final oil painting is an 8×10 original that captures Paisley just as her owner remembers her—alert, loving, and full of heart.
Testimonial: A Portrait That Brings Joy
“When my precious little girl Paisley passed away I was devastated and didn’t just want to print a photo of her. I wanted something extra special to memorialize her in my home. I immediately entrusted Hayward Gaude and asked him to make something special for me that was a reflection of how special she was to me.
I couldn’t imagine what Hayward would do for me and to my surprise it was such a beautiful portrait that captured the sweetness of my Paisley. Every detail was portrayed in this portrait. Every time I look at it, it just brings joy to my heart and beautiful memories of what she meant to me. I only shed tears of complete happiness because of this beautiful portrait. I have received several compliments on this portrait.
Thank you so much Hayward Gaude for such fine work.”
Behind the Scenes
The composite below, which I’ll be sharing in an upcoming TV segment, shows the transformation from three simple photos to the final painting. It’s a testament to what’s possible with care, creativity, and collaboration.
