Wind and Fire grew from an unexpected encounter along the Texas Gulf Coast near Rockport.
I was preparing to photograph the sunset when a great blue heron suddenly flew into the scene and landed directly in front of me. What began as a study of light and weather became something else entirely.
Rather than reproduce the photograph, I interpreted the scene through the contrast of movement and stillness: a turbulent sea beneath a sky ablaze with the last light of day, and a lone heron standing almost unnoticed amid the waves.
The painting is as much about the wind, water and extraordinary light as it is about the bird that unexpectedly became part of the moment.
