The river is never truly still.
Along the Guadalupe was painted from the same period of exploration that produced Survivor, shortly before the devastating floods of 2025. Here, the Guadalupe is already shown with energy and force, moving around exposed rock and beneath the roots of an old cypress that has stood beside the river far longer than any of us.
Near the center of the painting, a blue heron stands almost impossibly small against the breadth and movement of the water. It does not command the landscape. It simply belongs there, still and watchful while the river continues around it.
As part of the Life in Nature collection, Along the Guadalupe reflects on that relationship between permanence and change. Tree, stone, bird, and water each occupy a different measure of time, while the river binds them together in a landscape that is continually moving forward.
